Wedding Videography at The Barn at Willerby Hill

There are some wedding venues that look fantastic on paper, but when you actually arrive with a camera in your hand, you realise just how much a venue can make a difference to a wedding film.

The Barn at Willerby Hill is one of those venues.

Located on Willerby Hill near Hull and Beverley, The Barn combines rustic character with a modern, stylish feel, creating a wedding venue that is not only beautiful for couples and guests, but incredibly enjoyable to film.

As a wedding videographer, I love venues that give me variety — different spaces, great light, beautiful surroundings and plenty of room for the day to naturally unfold.

The Barn at Willerby Hill has all of that.

A beautiful mix of rustic charm and modern style

The first thing that strikes you about The Barn is how much space there is.

It has the character you'd hope for from a barn wedding venue, but with a much more contemporary feel than some traditional barn venues. The combination of rustic details, modern interiors, gardens and surrounding countryside creates a really versatile backdrop for a wedding film. The venue itself describes the style as “rustic modern”, combining timeless charm with contemporary elegance.

And that versatility is something I really appreciate when I'm filming.

The wedding doesn't have to look like it took place in one room.

The morning can have its own atmosphere.

The ceremony can feel grand and bright.

The drinks reception can move outside.

The wedding breakfast can feel big and impressive.

And then, when the evening arrives, the whole place transforms into a proper party venue.

That progression gives a wedding film a natural story.

The ceremony room at The Barn is one of the things I particularly enjoy filming.

It is bright, spacious and full of natural light, giving the ceremony a lovely open feeling while still retaining the warmth you'd expect from a barn venue.

The Orchard View Ceremony Room is licensed for civil ceremonies and can accommodate up to 150 guests, with large windows bringing in plenty of natural light. The room overlooks the gardens, giving the ceremony a beautiful connection with the outdoor surroundings.

From a videography perspective, natural light is incredibly important.

It means beautiful skin tones.

It means softer images.

It means the room feels alive on camera.

And, most importantly, it means I can capture the emotion of the ceremony without having to rely heavily on artificial lighting.

There is also the option of taking the ceremony outdoors, giving couples even more flexibility depending on the season and the weather.

Even bigger reception and dance floor spaces

Then the ceremony finishes and the scale of the venue really starts to show.

The reception spaces give couples plenty of room for a proper wedding celebration, with the evening reception able to accommodate up to 250 guests.

And that extra space makes a huge difference when the evening begins.

There is room for the tables and wedding breakfast without making the room feel cramped.

There is space for guests to mingle.

And then there is the large dance floor and evening party area, giving everyone plenty of room to let loose once the formalities are finished.

For a wedding videographer, this is fantastic.

Because nobody wants a dance floor that feels squeezed into the corner.

At The Barn, the evening has room to breathe.

The lights go down, the atmosphere changes, the music starts and suddenly you've got a completely different part of the wedding to capture.

Those are some of my favourite moments of any wedding film.

Accommodation right on site

Another big advantage of The Barn at Willerby Hill is the on-site accommodation.

There are four accommodation options on the grounds — The Granary, The Clocktower, The Langley and The Norton — with ensuite facilities and room for guests to stay after the celebrations.

That is a fantastic addition to the venue.

After a full day of celebrating, the last thing anyone wants is a long journey home.

Instead, guests can finish the night, walk back to their accommodation and wake up right there at the venue.

It also adds to the overall wedding experience. Rather than the wedding being something that starts when everyone arrives for the ceremony and finishes when the music stops, there is a much greater feeling of everyone being together in one place.

And for couples, having accommodation on site simply makes the whole day easier.

The staff are genuinely brilliant

But as I've said with every venue I've written about, a wedding venue is only as good as the people behind it.

And the team at The Barn at Willerby Hill are fantastic.

The venue has an experienced wedding coordinator who helps run the day, and that organisation really matters when you're trying to capture a wedding without constantly worrying about what's happening next.

For me, these little breaks away from the main room are incredibly valuable.
